In October 2023, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a significant recall of WanaBana fruit pouches due to elevated lead levels found in specific samples of WanaBana Apple Cinnamon Fruit Purée pouches. All WanaBana Apple Cinnamon Fruit Purée pouches, regardless of their expiration date, are included in this recall.
Following this discovery, the FDA urgently advised parents and caregivers to immediately stop providing these pouches to children and to safely dispose of any remaining products. Additionally, the FDA strongly recommended that toddlers and young children who might have consumed the recalled pouches undergo a blood test to check for potential lead exposure and consult with a healthcare provider.
Lead poisoning poses severe health risks, including developmental delays, learning disabilities, behavioral problems, and even fatal outcomes. Lead, a toxic metal, can harm the nervous system, particularly in children.

WanaBana Lead Poisoning News and Updates:
December 18, 2023: Today, the FDA announced that a sample of cinnamon, an ingredient in the recalled WanaBana fruit puree, was found to contain over 2,000 times the permissible safe limits for lead.
November 22, 2023: The FDA reported an increase in potential illnesses associated with the recalled apple/cinnamon pouches, affecting 52 individuals aged between 1 and 4 years old. Continuing its review of incoming cases, the agency cautioned consumers about the presence of the recalled product, WanaBana Apple Cinnamon Purée, found in multiple Dollar Tree stores nationwide. Collaborating with the retailer, the FDA is actively working to remove these products from shelves.
November 16, 2023: The FDA reported at least 34 illnesses potentially linked to the recalled apple/cinnamon pouches. Tests revealed lead levels 200 times higher than the FDA’s acceptable standard in a sample pouch from a Dollar Tree store. The probable cause appears to be contaminated cinnamon from Ecuador. The FDA is investigating and screening cinnamon shipments from various countries for lead contamination. The FDA also emphasized that fruit purée pouches from WanaBana, Weis, and Schnucks without cinnamon and not recalled by the companies did not show increased lead levels.
November 6, 2023: The FDA announced the recall of two additional cinnamon-applesauce products due to significantly elevated lead levels: specific Schnucks cinnamon-flavored applesauce pouches and variety packs in Illinois, Indiana, and Missouri, and certain cinnamon-applesauce pouches sold under the Weis supermarket brand name.
